This article examines the relationship between online gambling, digital lending, and the growing vulnerability of divorce among contemporary Muslim families in Indonesia. Drawing on a Hallaqian reading, the article frames divorce not merely as the result of domestic conflict, poor marital communication, or household financial failure, but as a symptom of the collapse of the family’s moral economy under the pressure of modern rationality, which normalizes debt, instant consumption, and digital speculation in everyday life. Using a qualitative approach based on critical literature review and conceptual engagement with Wael B. Hallaq’s thought, this article argues that online gambling and digital lending operate not only as economic instruments but also as moral technologies that reshape marital relations, the authority of maintenance, responsibility, shame, and familial trust. In many cases, divorce is not caused simply by the loss of income, but by the erosion of trust, the breakdown of family deliberation, and the weakening of self-restraint as an ethical foundation of Muslim household life. The article contends that Islamic family law needs to read contemporary divorce within a broader frame, namely as an outcome of digital economic structures that produce consumptive, indebted, and ethically detached subjects. A Hallaqian reading therefore opens a critical space beyond procedural legal approaches and offers an ethical basis for understanding the crisis of Muslim families in Indonesia’s digital capitalist landscape.
