Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought significant changes to the institution of marriage, including the emergence of the phenomenon of Long-Distance Marriage (LDM) among married couples within the context of digital marriages. This situation poses new challenges to the concept of maintenance in Islamic family law, which is classically formulated based on physical presence, cohabitation, and direct fulfillment of domestic needs.

This study aims to reconstruct the concept of maintenance in digital marriages by analyzing how husbands' maintenance obligations and wives' rights are implemented in LDM practices, and their relevance to the contemporary Islamic family law framework. This study used a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation with LDM couples in Karangpring Village, Sukorambi District, Jember Regency.

The results of this study indicate that alimony in digital marriages has undergone a transformation in form, encompassing financial support through digital transfers, emotional support through regular online communication, and symbolic and material support through the delivery of digitally documented physical packages. These practices demonstrate couples' adaptation to geographical separation and reveal the limitations of conventional alimony concepts in addressing the realities of digital marriages. This study argues that the concept of alimony in Islamic family law needs to be reconstructed by incorporating a digital dimension, geographic flexibility, and documentation mechanisms as part of fulfilling the rights and obligations of husband and wife. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic family law that is more responsive to the social and technological dynamics of the digital era.
